As we commemorate June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS SOUTHWEST) office of the Assistant General Secretary reflects on the struggles that birthed our democratic dispensation. The annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election was a watershed moment in our nation’s history, symbolizing the people’s desire for democracy, justice, and good governance. The sacrifices of our forebears, who fought tirelessly for the enthronement of democracy, remain an inspiration to us today.

However, as we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded that the struggle for good governance and accountability is far from over. The dreams of our forebears for a Nigeria characterized by transparency, equity, and justice remain largely unfulfilled. As students, we recognize the imperative of holding our leaders accountable and demanding better governance. We cannot afford to be complacent in the face of corruption, insecurity, and economic hardship that plague our nation. June 12 serves as a clarion call to action, urging us to recommit to the ideals of democracy and good governance.

As the representatives of the student populace, NANS SOUTHWEST calls on all Nigerians to join us in demanding accountability and transparency from our leaders. We must work together to build a Nigeria that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all. Let us honor the memory of those who fought for our democracy by continuing the struggle for good governance and accountability. Together, we can build a brighter future for our nation, where the dividends of democracy are enjoyed by all. We urge our leaders to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians, ensure justice and equity, and uphold the principles of democracy that June 12 represents.
